Competitor Picking Order

Qualifier Picking Order

  1. Last year’s 1st place winner from the Qualifier city picks the exact number in which he/she would like to compete*Ex. – The Marquis came in 1st place in Portland 2016. There are 15 competitors in Portland 2017. The Marquis elects to go 4th. The number 4 is removed from the selection hat.

*If the 1st place winner from the previous year in the Qualifier city is not present or does not exist, NO ONE will pick an exact number order. Winners from years prior to the previous year do not count.

  2. All remaining registered qualifier competitors will be randomly called to draw a random number out of a hat. All numbers should be drawn until a full competitor order is complete.
  3. Once the number drawing is complete, and if there are still available competitor slots, anyone may sign up at the show to be a Wildcard competitor. Once they do, they will compete before the first competitor from the number drawing. For each additional Wildcard competitor, they will continue to compete before the current first competitor.

Semifinals Picking Order

  1. Last year’s 1st place winner from the Semifinal city picks the exact number in which he/she would like to compete*Ex. – Lt. Facemelter  came in 1st place in San Francisco 2016. There are 20 competitors in San Francisco 2017. Lt. Facemelter elects to go 4th. The number 4 is removed from the selection hat.

*If the 1st place winner from the previous year in the Semifinal city is not present or does not exist, NO ONE will pick an exact number order. Winners from years prior to the previous year do not count.

  2. The 1st Place Qualifier Winners that have routed to the Semifinal city will be randomly selected to draw a number from the hat, with the caveat that they are allowed to draw a second time if they do not like their number.Ex. – Kara Picante draws the number 1 from the hat and elects to draw a second time. The number 1 stays out of the hat for her second draw. On her second draw, Kara receives number 7. Kara keeps the number 7 and then returns the number 1 to the hat.
    1. This does NOT include 2nd Place Qualifier Winners
    2. If a competitor is filling the spot of a first place Qualifier winner who could not attend, they do NOT receive this advantage and will draw with the remaining registered Semifinal competitors
  3. The Qualifier Organizers will be randomly selected to draw a number from the hat, with the same caveat that they are allowed to draw a second time if they do not like their number.
  4. All remaining competitors – including 2nd Place Qualifier Winners – will be randomly called to draw a random number out of a hat. All numbers should be drawn until a full competitor order is complete.
  5. There will be no wildcards from the audience at the Semifinals level.

Dark Horse Picking Order

  1. All Dark Horse competitors will be randomly called to draw a random number out of a hat. All numbers should be drawn until a full competitor order is complete.
  2. Drawn numbers can be swapped with USAG’s approval.
  3. If a competitor elects to go first in lieu of drawing a number, they must announce their intentions before numbers are drawn. The number 1 will then be removed from the hat and given to the competitor to compete in the first slot. If additional competitors would like to go first, they may follow the same process for the second or third slot with USAG’s approval.

Nationals Picking Order

  1. Last year’s National Champion picks the exact number in which he/she would like to compete*Ex. – Airistotle won the National Title in 2016. There are 25 competitors in Nationals 2017. Airistotle elects to go 4th. The number 4 is removed from the selection hat.

*Since Airistotle won the 2016 Air Guitar World Championship, he will not be defending the US Air Guitar National Title in 2017. Therefore, NO ONE will pick an exact number order. National Champions from years prior do not count.

  2. All remaining finalists will be randomly called to draw a random number out of a hat. All numbers should be drawn until a full competitor order is complete.
  3. Dark Horse winners will be the first to compete in the National Finals in the reverse order of their Dark Horse finish.*Ex. – The Dark Horse competition sends 5 winners to the Finals. Erik Ittar is the 1st place winner from the Dark horse and therefore will compete in slot number 5. Jim Hatfield is the 2nd place winner and will compete in slot number 4, and so forth.

*If there were ties for any place in the Dark Horse, each tied competitor would draw a number from a hat to determine the order in which they would compete.
